Flagship
The heavy-lift option for bulk excavation, reduced digs, demolition preparation, road construction and larger site clearance across Cornwall. A strong fit for housing plots, commercial groundworks and agricultural projects where reach, stability and breakout force matter. Available for operated or self-drive hire from Helston with delivery arranged.
Hire Available
The most popular machine in the fleet for domestic groundworks, drainage trenches, driveway preparation, landscaping and tighter access jobs across Cornwall. Compact enough for residential sites in Helston, Penzance, Falmouth and Truro while still carrying the power for proper excavation work. Our go-to mini digger hire option for homeowners and contractors.
Hire Available
Built for moving spoil, stone, aggregate and materials around active sites across Cornwall. Useful wherever muck needs shifting efficiently across uneven ground, from new-build plots and farm tracks to larger drainage and road preparation jobs. Pairs well with our excavator hire for complete site setups.
Hire Available
A ride-on roller for compacting Type 1, tarmac, road layers, car parks and driveway sub-bases. A good choice when the job needs wider drum coverage and consistent compaction across larger prepared surfaces. Available for hire across Cornwall with delivery from Helston.
Hire Available
The compact roller for tighter surfaces, paths, patios, narrow driveway work and trench reinstatement. It gives useful ride-on compaction where a larger roller would be too wide or heavy for the working area. Delivered to sites across Cornwall from Helston.
Hire Available
A remote-controlled trench roller for backfill, drainage trenches, service runs and confined compaction work. It keeps the operator clear while delivering strong compaction where ride-on rollers cannot safely or practically reach. Available for hire on sites across Cornwall.
Hire Available
A hand-operated compactor for patio bases, driveway preparation, paths, block paving and smaller reinstatement work. Forward and reverse movement makes it useful in confined areas and on domestic hard-landscaping jobs. Short-term and weekly plant hire available across Cornwall.
Hire Available
A rugged, powerful saw that cuts through asphalt, concrete, frozen ground and wire mesh with more precision than air or hydraulic breakers. Use it for road repair and for laying water, gas, electric and fibre-optic cables. The trench cleaner raises and lowers hydraulically, with cutting depth ranging from 15 cm to 80 cm depending on model. Available for hire across Cornwall.
Every plant hire is priced on enquiry based on machine, hire length, delivery distance from our Helston base, site access, and whether you need operated or self-drive hire. Delivery arranged across Cornwall.

Operated Hire:
Hire any machine with an experienced RW Groundworks operator. The operator arrives with the machine, works to your direction, and takes the machine away at the end of the day. This is the right option if you don't hold the relevant CPCS tickets, or if you want someone who knows the machine inside out running it on your site.
Operated hire rates include the machine and the operator. Fuel is charged at cost.
Self-Drive Hire:
If you hold the relevant CPCS or NPORS tickets, you can hire any machine on a self-drive basis. Machines are delivered to site and collected at the end of the hire period. A brief handover covers the controls and any machine-specific features.
Valid tickets must be presented before the machine is released. Insurance cover must be confirmed — either your own plant insurance or cover arranged through RW Groundworks.

RW Groundworks delivers plant across Cornwall. Machines are transported on our low-loader and delivered to site at the agreed time. Delivery costs depend on distance from Helston — call for a quote. For multi-day hires, the machine stays on site and delivery/collection is charged once.

Here are answers to common questions about our Plant Hire services.

Day rates start at £260 for our 3.3-tonne Hitachi mini excavator and £550 for the 14-tonne Doosan. Delivery and collection are charged on top based on distance from Helston. Weekly rates and multi-machine discounts are available — call Reuben on 07385 250920 for a quote based on your specific requirements.
For self-drive hire, you need a valid CPCS (Construction Plant Competence Scheme) or NPORS card for the machine category. For operated hire, no — our experienced operator runs the machine on your behalf. If you don't hold the right tickets, operated hire is the straightforward option.
Operated hire means the machine comes with a qualified operator from RW Groundworks. The operator drives the machine, works to your direction on site, and handles all aspects of machine operation. You get the machine and the expertise. This is the standard choice for customers who don't operate plant regularly.
For most domestic jobs — driveways, landscaping, drainage, small foundations — a 3-tonne mini excavator is the right choice. For new builds, large excavations, demolition, and road construction, the 14-tonne excavator is needed. Dumpers are sized to match — a 7-tonne dumper pairs well with the 14-tonne excavator. Call Reuben with a description of the job and he'll recommend the right machine.
Delivery costs depend on distance from our Helston base. Within the Helston and Penwith area, delivery is typically included or charged at a flat rate. Wider Cornwall deliveries are quoted individually. For multi-day hires, delivery and collection are charged once regardless of hire duration.
A deposit may be required for self-drive hire, refundable on return of the machine in good condition. The deposit amount depends on the machine hired. Operated hire does not require a deposit — invoiced on standard terms on completion of the hire period.
A micro digger weighs under 1 tonne and fits through standard doorways — used for indoor work, very tight access, and small garden jobs. A mini digger (like our 3.3T Hitachi) weighs 1 to 6 tonnes and handles most domestic and light commercial excavation. For anything beyond foundations and drainage on a single property, you'll typically need a mini digger at minimum. RW Groundworks can advise on which size suits your project.
Our 3.3-tonne Hitachi is approximately 1.5 metres wide, which fits through most side access gates. Standard garden gates are typically 0.9m to 1.2m wide — too narrow for tracked machines. If side access is tight, we can sometimes track across a front garden or use a smaller attachment. Call Reuben with your access measurements and we'll confirm whether the machine can reach the work area.
